Manipulated Google Maps Entries Raise Sovereignty Fears in Cambodia
Published September 15, 2025
PHNOM PENH — From falsified landmarks to offensive reviews, a Cambodian volunteer group has found 568 irregularities on Google Maps — a discovery that has reignited concerns about how online distortions could damage Cambodia’s reputation and weaken its sovereignty at a sensitive moment in border disputes with Thailand.
The findings will be formally released on September 6, according to the Cambodian Local Guides community, an informal network of volunteers from diverse backgrounds. Chy Sophat, a digital security expert who led the project, said about ten members were actively involved, with others contributing on a voluntary basis.
The group began its research after spotting unusual entries on Google Maps during recent border tensions. Their study highlights a range of problems: missing landmarks, fabricated locations, false information, and even offensive language inserted into place descriptions.
“In total, we documented 568 locations across 18 provinces and the capital, though the figure could change as situations evolve. Of these, 341 violated mapping rules, while 717 cases were linked to irregular or inappropriate reviews,” Sophat said.
